The Department of General Medicine is the backbone of the hospital, which has gone from strength to strength since its inception in 1956.

The General Medicine Department sees patients in the OPD, manages patients admitted to the medical wards, attends to patients in the 24 hour Emergency section of the Hospital and runs some special clinics like Diabetes and Respiratory diseases.

OPD

  • Nearly 400 to 500 patients are seen on a daily basis.
  • The cases include the diagnosis and follow up of patients with chronic medical problems like Diabetes, Hypertension, Bronchial Asthma, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), IHD (Ischemic heart disease), CCF (congestive cardiac failure), Thyroid illness, Tuberculosis etc. as also diagnosis and management of a variety of minor ailments presenting to the OPD.
  • Clinics in Dermatology and Psychiatry are conducted by the visiting doctors once in a month.

Medical Ward

  • Inpatient management of patients with Pneumonia, COPD exacerbations, Urinary tract infections, Sepsis with co-morbidities, like diabetes, hypertension, congestive heart failure, severe anaemia, GI bleeds, liver disease, infectious disease etc.
  • Performing procedures like thoracocentesis, paracentesis, synovial tap, lumbar puncture.
  • Updating and maintaining accurate patient records.
  • If necessary, referring patients to hospitals or specialist clinics for further investigation.
  • Giving appropriate health education and advice to patients and care givers to enable self-management.
  • Being a rural set up, the General Hospital has to deal with snake, scorpion envenomation, severe sepsis, acute MI, acute pulmonary oedema, hypertensive urgencies, DKA, HSS, Electrolyte abnormalities, acute severe asthma, CVA, paediatric emergencies, and other cases presenting to Emergency.
